80's, '80s or 80s?

Which of the following sentences is/are correct?

1) Simple Minds was/were a band formed in the 80's.

2) Simple Minds was/were a band formed in the '80s.

3) Simple Minds was/were a band formed in the 80s.

You'll see all of these. I personally dislike (1), but it's common, and I guess some people view it as correct. (2) seems slightly fussy to me, though it is logical.
