73rd or 73th

Hello,

73rd or 73th

42nd or 42th

which one is correct?

I was taught that 42nd and 73rd are right. but I found that many people write 73th or 42th on the content of their website.

Are they wrong?

To me only 73rd & 42nd are correct, since three > third, and two > second.

73rd and 42nd

I lot of people write a lot of nonsense on the Web. 73th and 72th are most assuredly wrong.

Always pay attention what are the last two letters when you write a number as a word. Therefore:

twenty-first would be 21st
twenty-second would be 22nd
twenty-third would be 23rd

All the other numbers that are not "first, second or third" end in "th", like 35th (thirty-fifth) or 10th (tenth)

Hello,

Why is it not possible to say noughth (0th), while eighth is correct?
What to do about nought (0)?

Thanks

Ordinal numbers define a thing's position in a sequence. I don't see 'nought' as relating to a position in a sequence. Can you provide an example of a sentence where you would want to say something like this?

Nought is a special case.

There is no ordinal version.

Hi,

For example: 0th polynomial is assumed equal to 0 or 0th-order polynomial interpolation can be done...
Gmmm...then it cannot be pronounced

Hi,

You should ask a mathematician to comment on such a specialized case. Emotion: smile

"Zeroth" wouldn't bother me. I also asked my daughter, who has taken a lot more higher-level math than I ever did (and more recently). She says that in speaking she would say "zeroth" and in fact if she had to write it she would write it out that way. She said, in fact, that the idea of writing out 0-t-h "appalls" her. Of course, if you've found it that way in books, it might be standard in som
