If someone is five-foot-two inches tall, is it alright to write that they are "five-two" like so?

Yes, that is okay. I'm five-four. Of course, you wouldn't do it in formal writing.

How would that sound any different from the correct spelling?

It wouldn't sound any different, it would just look different. Plus, Word isn't underlining "alright" as being an incorrect spelling, so I always thought that, unless one was writing formally, "alright" and "all right" were interchangeable.

Perhaps Snarf is referring to a written dialogue (a chat). Both spellings are included in the Longman dictionary but it makes it clear that many people consider that alright is incorrect.
