5 year old Nepalese Girl - NO ENGLISH

Hello.

I work in an infant school and we have recently got a new child who is 5 years old and from nepal. She does not understand any English at all. and is very distressed when she comes into school. She has only been in England for a week. She cries until she falls asleep and then goes home. But we are trying to intergrate her. However as she speaks no english and understand no english we are finding it hard to calm her down and have started to think of ways to communicate with her and to help her understand English so she can speak to her peers and not feel to lost and distressed.

We have thought of using flash cards etc. and I studied English Language Teaching at University so I have some idea. But not for children so young with no knowledge.

Any ideas are welcome Emotion: smile

Thank you for reading.

Hi Taryn -- I think your ide of using flash cards is a very good one. I would start with images of things that the little girl needs for working there at school -- pencil, crayon, desk, table, boy, girl, teacher, etc. At her age, I imagine you can't just print the English word on the back of a flash card (I assume she can't read English yet), but working on a small number of words at first might allow you to work personally with her, speaking and repeating the words to help her learn them and learn how to say them properly.

  • Keep the number of new words small and she'll learn a few quickly, then those will encourage her to learn more.
  • At her age, she'll be fine once she's no longer overwhelmed.
