4 in a row

I don't know if you could picture this or if I've managed to write it correctly.
There were 8 of it. We walked down the street four in a row, and and four of us in a row behind us.

Thanks

I never heard abreast. Is it common speech?

If I want to say it my way, Is it best to say row?
...four in one row and four in a second row behind?

Thank you

I never heard abreast. Is it common speech? It's not unusual, although I don't often hear conversations about how 8 people are walking. It's common in military contexts that talk about soldiers marching.

I would not say it, but if I wanted to describe a scene in a movie where people were walking down the street like that, then what would be the way to say it? I don't want it too formal.
