3rd conditional + rather

Can anyone help me with this sentence:

If she'd had the chance, she'd rather .... 100 years ago.

If there was no "rather" I would know the answer... but there is. Which answer is correct?
A. lived
B. have lived
C. had lived

It's used as an adverb or before a verb and it has many uses. What you should look at is the tense you have. would + stem(have)+ past participle) If she had had the chance, she would rather had lived (the same reason, after would there's a stem(infinitive without to).

  • Thus,B is correct.

Rather doesn't change anything. It's used as an adverb or before a verb and it has many uses.
What you should look at is the tense you have.

If she had had the chance, she would rather lived ( would + stem or bare infinitive= for example: would live.)

If she had had the chance, she would rather

she would (rather) have lived

The 'd represents would, a modal verb. Only a bare infinitive can follow a modal verb.

Of the three words that would come next (A lived, B have, C had), only one is a bare infinitive.
