3rd conditional

Hello,

Which one these is correct?

a) I wouldn't have run away if you had told that it had been you at whom I had been looking.

b)I wouldn't have run away if you had told that it was you at whom I was looking.

I think that a) correct because it all had happened before he ran away, but it sounds rather odd.

I appreciate any help!
