3rd Conditional

Hi

Could anyone explain which one of these sentences are correct. I know they're 3rd Conditional forms but want to know in detail which one is correct and why. My instinct tells me the first one is correct.

The teacher wouldn't have given us the exam if we hadn't studied

Or

The teacher wouldn't have given us the exam if we had studied.

Thanks

Is that because the teacher in the first sentence is giving a test because he knew the studies had studied and in the second he is giving the students a test because they hadn't studied?

Thanks for your reply
