3rd conditional

Hi, I understand that this tense is use for events in the past. However, from time to time, i heard people say that ' had you not told me, I would have gone tomorrow ( or something refers to the future ). Would this not break the law of third conditional tense as tomorrow hasn't come.

thanks

lingoting had you not told me, I would have gone tomorrow As far as I'm concerned,I would rather use the mixed conditional which combines the second and the third conditional. Because your sentence carries "tomorrow",it would be different. examples: If you had driven more carefully, you would not have had an accident = you HAD an accident because you DID NOT drive carefully.

  • lingoting had you not told me, I would have gone tomorrow As far as I'm concerned,I would rather use the mixed conditional which combines the second and the third conditional.

  • examples: If you had driven more carefully, you would not have had an accident = you HAD an accident because you DID NOT drive carefully.
  • Either the action or event happened or didn't happen.
  • However,to have "tomorrow" in the sentence,we should use Mixed Conditional.

Hi everlastinghope

Thank you very much for your reply. What you said makes total sense to me. So, using third conditional tense for something that hasn't happened is definitely and always wrong?

If that's the case, why would my english-speaking colleagues make such a mistake.

May I ask another question,

Had they not cancelled the meeting, it'd have been tomo

Hi, Here is how I approach the questions about 3rd conditional. "had they not.." is another way of saying " If they had not" which is the base required to form the text book 3rd conditional. It always has a past connotation.

Hi Thanks for your input. May I ask the correct way of saying it?

Had they not cancelled the meeting, it'd be tomorrow?

Back to your example, what If I John told me the meeting was cancelled on Wednesday and I was going to book tickets on Friday, and today was Thursday? Would it be :

Had John not told me the meeting was cancelled, I'd be booking the hotel and flight tom

Hi Thank again for your reply.
dimsumexpress if you opted to use the 3rd conditional construction, then you should not mixed it with other conditional patterns,
how about mixed-conditional tense? abstracted from http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/conditional2.htm

dimsumexpressNot true. In fact it is the opposite. 3rd conditional is used to express counter-factual context. It would be correct, If you said: Had John not told me yesterday the meeting was cancelled in San Francisco, I would have booked the hotel and flight this morning. Facts: John did tell me the meeting had been cancelled and I didn't book the flight and hotel.

It's not matter of opting or not for the third conditional, but what matters is the meaning of the sentence.
