300-dot-per inch printer OR 300-dots-per-inch printer?

10-meter rod, 5-second interval, 3-kilogram sample...

What is the correct use of dots per inch, 300-dot-per-inch printer OR 300-dots-per-inch printer?

Assume that there is some reason not to use the abbreviation 'dpi'.

Please explain the rule (if any) for using a singular form in '5-meter-per-second velocity' but a plural form in '300-dots-per-inch printer'.
