Her face rings a bell slightly. Something tells me I know her. (Can you use slightly with rings a bell? Is the second sentence natural?

"of" is not required. It is inserted by some US speakers. To me, as a BrE speaker, it sounds like a horrible error. I believe that some educated AmE speakers may also dislike it.
