I REFER to the report, “Time to turn to eBooks” (The Star, April 16). Although eBooks have provided several advantages to us in this era of technology, we still prefer the classic printed books due to several reasons. First of all, owning a book is much different than owning an eBook. Full ownership comes only when you have made it a part of yourself, and the best way to make yourself a part of it is by writing in it. EBooks allow you to have a different kind of property right from owning a book. It’s more like owning insurance than owning furniture. One is virtual and even revocable, while the other one is physical and irrevocable. In addition, a book is a single-tasking device while the eBooks device offers multi-function which distracts readers from reading. EBooks devices, such as iPad and smartphones, are rarely single-function or, perhaps more correctly, are tending away from single-function. Meanwhile, a book is inherently opposed to multi-tasking. There is nothing else that can be done while reading a book and the book never seeks to distract its reader. Furthermore, a book can be loaned but it is a different thing when it comes to eBooks. Copying files of eBooks is considered piracy because most eBooks have a digital rights management which ties them to a particular owner. In conclusion, I suggest people to remember the goods of the classic books when there are other more options with the advancement of internet and online technologies.
