2nd conditional subjunctive mood

Hi
I'm writing a song in the 2nd conditional tense. I understand when talking in the hypothetical 'were' should always be used instead of 'was' however I only feel comfortable using 'was' with the following line

If the world WERE/WAS going to end this afternoon at 3pm, would you stay and hold my hand and tell jokes to pass the time.

The song is for ESL students so needs to be grammatically correct. Is it just me and my bad grammar habit or does it feel more natural to use 'was' in this case?

Any ideas appreciated
Thanks
G
