20,000 Words University S's Should Know? Help...

Hello,
First I'd like to say that I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum. I apologize if that's the case.

My name is Glenn. I'm working for a small publishing company in Taiwan. I've recently been put in charge of putting together a list of 20,000 words that every university-level student of English should know. (or at least be studying) To be honest, there's nothing in my academic or job history that makes me the right person for this job. I am in no way qualified to choose these words. But as things go, it has fallen into my lap. The project itself is an online English learning course. There will be various levels of self-study with tests at the end of each level.

My question: Where can I find 20,000 words suitable for university-level English-learning students? I've searched the Internet and have compiled several lists. (UWL, AWL, GSL, Common words, technical words, etc...etc...) But again, I have no qualifications to know which ones would be suitable. My last resort will be to just put them all together, delete duplicates, and hope it comes close to 20,000. But for obvious reasons, I would rather not go this route.

Are there any companies that I can pay money for a professional list? I figure there must be, but I can't seem to find them.

Thank you for any help and/or advice you can offer.

Best,
Glenn

Hello, Glenn-- and welcome to English Forums. Put them all together and delete the duplicates. If you need more, pick up 2 or 3 of the millions of TOEFL vocabulary practice books and a couple of the Barron's '600 Words You Need to Know' and '1100 Words You Need to Know' study guides, etc.

  • Good lord, just about every ESL and college prep publishing house has vocabulary books out, so you might as well throw together your own mix.
  • There're plenty of polysyllabic college-level words to go around.

Thanks. It's looking like I'm going to have to go that way. I was hoping to avoid it though. Problem is, our customers have been spoiled by our customer service. (small, struggling company = they can ask us anything and we'll do it) With most of the books we publish, the customers tend to ask a bunch of questions (often rediculous!) about "why we wrote this" "what does that mean" or "It should be

One more thing-- you might try to search out a frequency lexicon like the Cambridge English Lexicon, which is a graded list of words with their frequency of occurrence in the written language. The trouble is, I don't think they exist for advanced vocabulary.
