2 sentences that aren't clear to me

"It spared myself from an awkward asking." => How should I say this sentence correctly and naturally?

"What they were doing is drinking." => Is also fine to say was? It has somewhat taken me aback, but to be honest, I also think "is" is the best and only option, isn't it?
