PalinkasocsiAccording to a grammar book, the sentence She had met a man at the party the day before yesterday has at least two meanings: What are the two 'meanings' of the sentence? Here you have listed two possible terms for the tense, one of which is questionable.

Perhaps the book was drawing attention to the fact that the past perfect is the tense that reports both the present perfect and the simple past.

She has (already) met Vera.
Tom said she had (already) met Vera.

She met Vera yesterday.
Tom said she had met Vera the previous day.

Just a guess.
