1st-floor carpet OR 1st floor carpet

If we write out an ordinal in the following manner, is the hyphen required?

They were instructed to shampoo the 1st-floor carpet.

They were instructed to shampoo the 1st- and 2nd-floor carpet.

Both correct as punctuated?

Thank you.

The hyphen is correct, but I would write "first-floor" and "second-floor" (similar to writing out small cardinal numbers in words). Probably the second sentence should say "carpets", plural.
