1st conditional and 2nd conditional

if my brother studied harder, he would get good marks.
if my brother studies harder, he will get good marks.

now what is the difference in the meaning of the above two sentences?i know the first sentence is second conditional and 2nd statement is 1st conditional, but what is the difference in the meaning?

does the first sentence mean that my brother doesn't study well but if he did he would succeed in scoring good marks?if not then which one should i say in which condition?

please explain me the difference between the two. with examples please.
