1990s were/was?

Hi,

The 1990s were/was a decade of irresponsibility.

Is it were or was???

I think the time is uncountable, but does this apply in this case?

Thank you!

(Iasked this before, but for some reason, the question vanished...)

It is not a matter of uncountability. 'The 1990s' is a single period.

I respect the two of you very much indeed! And am always thankful.
But your answers are inconsistent... What should I do??????

What should I do? Note that educated English speakers occasionally disagree.

Here is my argument in a nutshell:

The 1990s was a decade of irresponsibility.
The 1990s were years of irresponsibility.
