One of the things that concerns Newmark is, when we translate something from one language to another, should we try to stay true to the exact thoughts, word-by-word, that were going through the mind of the speaker or writer at the time, or is it more important to get across a sense to our current readers what that person was trying to say?

For example, there are still fairly close word-for-word translations of what Chinese Masters said about meditation 2,000 or more years ago. Maybe, just maybe, we can interpret those things in a way that a Western audience would understand more easily. Which is better? I think what Newmark is saying is - it all depends - but we need to think about it very carefully before we do one or the other
