1960s motorways

Could you tell me if there are any names for your motorways and how they have changed over years, please?

[/nq] The first one was the M1. It was given that name just because it was the very first (M for motorway, 1 for first). Subsequent motorways were named after the A roads which they paralleled - for example, the M4, the M8 etc.

  • [/nq] The first one was the M1.
  • It was given that name just because it was the very first (M for motorway, 1 for first).
  • Subsequent motorways were named after the A roads which they paralleled - for example, the M4, the M8 etc.
  • The one which paralleled the A1 had to be named the A1(M) because the name M1 had already been used.
  • None of the names have ever changed since they were built.

Why? Because this is a newsgroup for pedants to quibble about English language usage in the UK. If you knew exactly where the motorway went you wouldn't have made the mistake.
