1940s,1950s,...

Hi,
For the decades referring to the following years we use the words in front of them:
e.g: 1940s >> forties
1960 >> sixties
How about 1910 or 2000?
And how do we know which century they are referring to? For example, what do we mean by saying 40s? 1940 or 1840?

Sometimes the 1910s are called the "teens", but this is less common than the others (twenties, thirties, etc.)

The word "noughties" was coined for the 2000s, but it has a humorous feel and has not really been adopted for serious mainstream use.

For twenties, thirties, forties etc., the 20th century is assumed unless the context obviously indicates otherwise.
