TOPIC: In the future, it is expected that there will be a higher proportion of older people in some countries. Is this positive or negative development

It is anticipated that with the many breakthrough medical developments and ever-improving life quality, the number of old people in many countries will become much greater than ever before. In this essay I would outline several benefits as well as drawbacks arising from this trend and give my opinion about the problem.

On the one hand, having a growing proportion of senior citizens could be advantageous for the society in many ways. To begin with, an increase in the number of old people means a greater pool of volunteers for community and government projects. This is because the fact that a majority of elderly people are already retired, thus they have more time to participate in many community services. Furthermore, seeing old people engage in helping others will instill a great sense of responsibility and altruism into the young generation, leading to the introduction of a selfless lifestyle among the young.

However, aging populations will place many pressures on the young generation and the nation as a whole. Firstly, governments and businesses will have to cover a increase retirement pensions and health care costs. Consequently, tax-payers have to bear a greater financial burden and the young workforce will have to work harder and care for the elderly. Furthermore, the lack of young labour would be stagnate the growth of economy. Take Japan as an example, the country where the people’s life expectance is highest in the world is now facing those undesirable impacts.

In conclusion, although I agree that a high proportion of senior citizens is beneficial in certain ways, the merits cannot match the damage it inflicts.
