It is believe that instead of promoting exchange and understanding between people from different backgrounds, global tourism only tenses up the relationship between countries. Personally, I disagree with the idea and will explain my reason in the this essay.
It is true that the rise of international tourism is associated with several disputes between foreign visitors and local citizens. This is because tourists often show little respect or underrate the importance of local customs and religious beliefs. Take Thailand for example, certain acts, like touching or pointing at the Buddha statue, can be considered to be inappropriate and disrespectful, which are not always known by many visitors. Such actions are likely to create resentment from the locals, visitors may be subjected to criticism or even worse, being deported. However, tourists can easily avoid the situation by thoroughly doing research about the culture of their destination before traveling.
I would argue that international tourism is the foundation for establishing a good understanding cultural discrepancy. Firstly, a trip to a foreign country offers traveller the opportunity to gain first-hand experience on the traditions and customs of that country, something that they can never achieve by reading books. In fact, most of information and knowledge about a country’s culture are obtained from traveling, thus I am strongly convinced that there is no other better way to learn about cultural difference than traveling . Moreover, through interaction, both visitors and native people can broaden their knowledge and be more aware of the distinctiveness between each cultures and hence, show more respect to one another belief and cultural perspectives.
In conclusion, although there is a slight chance that international tourism can result in tension between countries, I strongly believe that the benefits brought about are of greater significance.
