Many people believe that only when stringent punishments are implied that road safety can be improved. Even though I agree that strict regulations could be an effective method, I think other measures should be simultaneously carried out in order to ensure road safety.

On the one hand, it is true that the implementation of harsher punishments could result in several positive impact. In fact, those penalties can act as deterrent to any would-be lawbreakers and hence effectively decrease the number of traffic accidents. In Vietnam, for example, since the government increase the fine for not wearing helmet from $20 to $100, there are more people abide to this law and consequently, reduce the number of annual road casualty by half.

However, strictly enacting laws alone can not completely eliminate all factors that affect road safety. For instance, besides lacking of compliance with traffic rules, a considerable amount of road accidents are caused by bad quality roads. That is why allocating more money on maintaining and renovating traffic system seem to be a more feasible measure to tackle this contributor. Another method can be used to protect the welfare of traffic participants is heightening people’s awareness about the consequences of riving offenses and promoting the use of public transports. By combining all the aforementioned ideas that we can achieve the best result.

In conclusion, although stricter punishments seem to be the most compelling way to minimize driving offenses, other course of actions, including raising people’s awareness and improving road quality, are also needed to be able to ensure road safety
