Many people argue that spending money on maintaining public libraries is no longer necessary because we can now get access to information instantly via computer. Although I agree that we greatly benefit from computer technology, libraries is essential in our life and it is still worth spending money on preserving such facilities.
On the one hand, it is true that computer technology has brought about many benefits. Firstly, computer can store a huge amount of information that is greater than any physical libraries. This will allows people to get information, make comparison between from different sources and hence, have a more accurate and complete information. Furthermore, with the help of computer technology, people can easily look up for information from any where in the world, any time of a day. This can be particularly beneficial to those who have a hectic schedule and cannot visit libraries during the opening hours.
However, public libraries have their distinguishing features that cannot be substituted by any technological advancement. For example, a large number of senior citizens still consider libraries as their main source of information. In fact, most of elderly people are technophobes and therefore, physical libraries are their preferred option. Additionally, information from libraries is considered more reliable than other sources. This is due to the strict rules about evaluating and categorizing information in libraries that makes it trustworthy.
In conclusion, although the advancement of computer technology has significantly impacted the way information is stored, accessed and shared, there are rational reasons for maintaining the existence of public libraries.
