Vocabulary

17 of the next 21 months

Hi teachers,

Can you please explain this sentence for me? What is 17 and 21?

After the previous recession ended in November 2001, companies slashed payrolls for 17 of the next 21 months.

Thank you.

It means that in the following 21 month time period 17 of those months had payrolls reduced when compared with before the recession. So during the period of December 2001 thru August 2003 (if my math is right! ), 17 of the months in that period had lessened payrolls.

  • It means that in the following 21 month time period 17 of those months had payrolls reduced when compared with before the recession.

  • ), 17 of the months in that period had lessened payrolls.
  • We are not told which months though.

Hi Canderson,

Thanks again. My math is not very good. So does that mean "the remaining 3 months was normal payrolls"?

Hey Tinanam,

Either the remaining 3 months had normal payrolls, or possibly higher than normal payrolls. It really doesn't specify.

Have a nice day,
