$110K =$110,000???

Hi,

In the following sentence:

In many US counties the median family income is more than $110K per year

Is $110k equal to $110,000, in which, k means kilo or what? If so, why is it used that way?

In addition, I know that 1 grand=1000 dollars, so what's the difference between $100k and 100 grand? And in what situations should they be used. Thanks very much!

'K' just stands for 'kilo'-, which is from the Greek for 'thousand'. It is used to mininimize the number of zeros – it often appears in classified ads and other newspaper copy. 'Grand' is old-fashioned, and you will seldom hear it outside of old gangster movies.

Hi;

K is a short cut for 1000, except in a digital storage context where it is 1024.
$100K = $100,000.
1K bytes of memory = 1024 bytes.

Grand is slang (or informal) for $1000. It is mostly used in connection with criminal activity, betting, the lottery, etc..
He won 5 grand playing poker.
