100,000 shares is/are the total number of shares voted for the resolution.

"100,000 shares is/are the total number of shares voted for the resolution."
Which verb-to-be should be used here?
IMO, "are" is more appropriate as it agrees with the plural subject "100,000 shares".
But when the context is considered, "is" also sounds right here if you take "100,000 shares" as a whole number.

Which one is grammatically correct or which one sounds more natural to you?

I would use the singular, because you are equating this "100,000 shares" to "total number" which is singular.

On the other hand, this is plural:

100,000 shares were voted for the resolution.

In the third clause of the first sentence, "were' was used after a number w

ChaceWhat is the reason for this?
In this case, total number does not "rename" a number, so it is not considered one unit.
