10 second rule

I was at a party and some cake dropped on the floor. I claimed the 10 second rule, which states that as long as the food is scooped up within 10 seconds it may still be eaten. Someone else informed me that it was a 5 second rule, another a 30 second rule. What exactly is the rule?

It's however long you need it to be in that particular situation to justify that particular compound faux pas. I've heard 10 seconds more often than any other.

You're both way too fussy. I just brush it off and eat it, never mind the stopwatch.
