'for' is optional.

Why?

Only the second one looks grammatical correct to me. Perhaps, the first one is idiomatic but ungrammatical.

I would say that waiting for a few minutes, is waiting for them to end, end wait a few minutes, is waiting for another thing to get back. both are grammatically correct
