In your version. the Joneses are liable to experience many times of 'no greater adversity' (= equal or lesser adversity).

no times of greater adversity, to me, still means equal or lesser adversity...But I think I see what ya mean.

Can you please tell me what is wrong with the original's main clause, if anything? Did you just make it simpler?

Simpler, yes. I don't think we can 'count' ourselves 'thankful'; we simply are or are not. In any case, don't let words seduce you.
