1. In the developed world, average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of ageing populations.

It is undeniable that in development societies, more and more people are living longer than ever before. Although there will be undoubtedly be some negative consequences of this trend, solutions can be taken to tackle these potential problems.

Several problems can be anticipated when human’s lifespan is growing. The main issue is that this will put a heavy burden on government’s budget. This stands to reason that elders need more supervision by the state authorities, including retirement pension, healthcare expenses, or housing for those who cannot afford their rent. As a result, governments will not only receive less money in taxes in relation to the size of the population but they also have to pay large sums of money for elders. The second pressure is that ageing may worsen the condition of unemployment. It can be seen that there are a lot of old people who cannot afford their daily spending, and they have to work even when they are over 65 or 70 years old. However, many of them cannot compete with other target groups, especially young people seeking the same jobs; therefore, society will face more jobless seniors.

There are a number of approaches that the government can implement to reverse the issue mentioned above. Firstly, authority have to escalate their budget to improve seniors' quality of life through increasing taxes paid by properties or businesses. This means that more citizens pay higher taxes, the more benefits they will earn during their retirement age. By this way, government will have more saving to raise old people’s pensions. In addition, the state should assist these aged citizens by prioritising them in some appropriate careers. Writers or poets, for instance, can continue to be hired in public institutions even if they reach retirement age.

In conclusion, various measures could be taken in order to combat the problems that are certain to arise as the populations of countries grow older.
