Hi,

Also I heard "_at_ one's thirties".

This sounds odd. In what context do you hear this?

Right you are, Marius. It would of course be possible to have at right before his 40s if another word required it. A word like look, stare or hint. All these take at: What are you staring at?

from what i remember - he is in his 40's is correct because it is a contraction. all words that are adjusted for slang have an apostrophe. for example: 'cuz, ain't, o'clock

Abbreviations, letters of the alphabet, symbols, numerals, and so on. The tendency nowadays is to add a simple -s at the end when pluralising these, though -'s at the end is still fairly common. So the abbreviations MP and VIP would preferably be pluralised as MPs and VIPs ; similarly words not used as nouns: whys and wherefores.

1: What does the above red sentence mean?

2: Is 40's a contraction of something, like 40ties?

Hi,

In formal writing, for example an essay, rather than 40's or 40s, you should write the expression out in words, eg he was in his forties.

Very good point. It's more pleasing when written out, anyway.
