1. give up [the] something
2. give up on [the] something

Hi,
I asked one native English speaker in http://forum.wordreference.com/threads/giving-up-on-the-grad-school-was-a-blow.3231295/ if we can use the definite article "the" in #1 and #2. He told me that I can't. But I have found many sentence examples that the definite article "the" can work with them.

What's your opinion?
