Hi,
I was just watching a video about a boot camp. In one scene the narrator says that as part of their training they have to do a reconnaissance (he used this word specifically).

Is this word still commonly used or is it too formal?

Thank you.

CalifJimI believe they also often abbreviate it to "recon" (stress on the first syllable).
Also to "recce", pronounced as re-kee.
