She wanted to make sure that I did the right thing when I decided to drop out of school.

or

She wanted to make sure that I had done the right thing when I had decided to drop out of school.

or

She wanted to make sure that I had done the right thing when I decided to drop out of school. (A friend of mine once told me that this would be possible because the sentence sounds ponderous with too many 'hads' in it, so it's better to omit the 'had' before 'decide'.)
