Is "dame" the female equivalent for "dude," as in "dudes and dames"?

I don't think there is a single answer to this. To me, "dame" (in the relevant sense) sounds somewhat more old-fashioned than "dude". Maybe "dudes and chicks"?

There is actually a word "dudette", but I think it has limited use, possibly mostly facetious.
