That was quite a few years ago. It won't be easy to find your teachers and ask them anymore now.

"storey" is the British word for a floor of a building. How many storeys does that skyscraper have? Americans spell it as "story" (plural "stories").

For all other meanings both BrE and AmE have "story".

Another distinction like this is "whisky / whiskey". "whisky" is generally Scotch whisky. Writing it as "whiskey" can get you in trouble in Scotland.

This a rarely seen (in the US) variant spelling of story.  Elementary school teachers can have their little quirks, and they have a receptive audience of youngsters who take everything they say as gospel.  There are certain things I was taught in elementary school that remain with me to this day, like:  when opening a can, make sure the label is right side up, that is, don't open a can from the bottom - or else!
