... and that meaning is interesting. There is a simple sport called tug-of-war which involves a longish rope and, at either end, a team of people pulling on it in opposite directions. A line is drawn on the ground between the two teams and the match is won when one team pulls the other over the central line. The sport is believed to go back at least as far as 8th century BC

Usually, the person at the back of a team does not actively pull; the rest of the team, in front, do the pulling. The person at the back just tries to hold the ground that the team have won so far. That person plays the anchor role

Metaphorically, then, to play the anchor role is not so much to play a noticeably active role, but to keep a team stable: to make sure that the team keeps on track to achieve its goal
