... and that meaning is interesting. There is a simple sport called tug-of-war which involves a longish rope and, at either end, a team of people pulling on it in opposite directions. A line is drawn on the ground between the two teams and the match is won when one team pulls the other over the central line. The sport is believed to go back at least as far as 8th century BC
