I've watched a match recently between two teams which have a long rivalry. One of the commentators just before the start of the match said, "It can't get bigger than this", which I think should have been "It couldn't get bigger than this". Am I right?

That's correct just before the match.

So, is "couldn't" wrong?

It would be used after the match has started, and its nature of being a great match has become obvious.
