Vocabulary

My girlfriend uses words like was instead of were, went, where gone is appropriate, them instead of those. It seem to be an intractable issue that I try to let go after calling it to her attention so many times that it is clear it is useless. Doing some research, I find that much of her speech (an idiom?) is similar to that found under Appalachian English in Wikipedia. I am trying to find out where people get this speech Mostly rural, less educated. Can anyone else throw some light on where this kind of speech comes from- Even if it is simply bad English, that would not explain why a lot of people use the same speech.

Robertenn I am trying to find out where people get this speech Local or regional speech patterns occur all over England, the US, and the old Commonwealth countries. The speech patterns come from the original settlers, and then they develop their own idiosyncrasies. It is well known by linguists that a language evolves, and isolated communities will, over generations, invent new vocabulary words and change the pronunciation patterns and grammar of the original mother tongue.
