Why do we use 'get' for mad (get mad) but not for cry (Don't cry.)?

Top answer

I don't see how "get mad" and "don't cry" are comparable in any relevant way. "get" in "get mad" means "become" (though "become mad" is not so idiomatic in the relevant meaning).
