"He should have just rejected the award by saying he did not deserve to get it as it was the most prestigious award in the country. He would have had the support of many people if he had done it so. He hadn't done anything great for the country, and it was the ruling party decided to give the most prestigious award to him for the sake of votes in upcoming elections. He knew he didn't deserve but accepted it. He lost my respect, and so did he lost the respect of many people."

Are there any mistakes in the above paragraph?

1. Is "upcoming" correct? The elections were over. I am talking about the past. So just asking whether it is correct or not.

2. "He lost my respect, and so did he lost respect of many people" this is too wordy. Is there any way to just simplify it using the same "so ....." structure or any other way?
