1924, Paris, HUN vs. GBR
Since the two sides tied in regular time of their elimination round and there was no clear hint in the rules what to do in this case, the jury ordered two additional halves - for exactly the same duration as the regular ones. But after those two extra halves it was still tied and another two followed. As if a soccer game had lasted 270 minutes... It was a huge and exhausting fight as at that time the rules didn't allow the use of substitutes, so the seven players on each side had to battle through the entire duration of the clash. While they were playing, news spread about the endless game and the pressmen rushed to the venue. At one point play was halted and the teams were ordered to get out of the pool and pose for the photographers! Britain's triple Olympic champion Paul Radmilovic made the shape of a pistol with his fingers and 'fired' a shot into his head as he jumped back into the water... And it went on and on... Finally the Hungarians netted the decisive goal to win 7-6 but the clash was so tiring that they were easily beaten the next day, However, their encounter with the Brits, who had won the last three Olympic titles, clearly showed: a new powerhouse had been born.
at one point?
ordered? just like the Hitler gives a order to military?
what is "it" here?

Hi I don't know your source (it looks interesting), but I think you have it right. The sports teams could see no point in posing for a photograph and they probably weren't happy about it. But they were told they had to do it.

  • Exactly like a military order By the time we reach 'it' (where you underline it).
  • I think the writer is just referring back to the whole situation - By now, it was becoming a complete farce Dave
