Grammar

1. A turning gear noise.
2. A gear turning noise.

Are both of them correct? If different, what is it?

Top answer

I don't know what piece of machinery this is, but the gears must need oiling. Gears turn and are usually quiet--as with clock mechanisms. A clock that ticks, might be said to have a turning gear noise.

  • The actual noise might be described as a gear-turning noise.
  • So #1 is correct; and #2 needs a hyphen.
