What is meant by retrospectively here

Were Buddhism and Jainism philosophical systems or religions? While the term 'religion' can be used retrospectively to refer to them, they were-at least to start off with-not religions in the sense in which it is often used and understood.

Please explain to me the entire phrase involving retrospectively.

Thank you.

In modern times, we can describe them as religions, but they did not start as religions (as we define "religion" today).
