He is quite well now, ____ .

a) except for a slight cold
b) except a slight cold
c) except have a slight cold
d) expecting a slight cold

Answer is (a) according to my book. I don't understand why (a) is chosen. Can't we choose (b)?

Also, I don't understand why 'for' is used here.

What is the difference between (a) ,(b) and (c)?

please advise.

Can't we choose (b) as 'except' and 'except for' carries the same meaning?

Can you tell me the difference between the two with examples?
