Dear Members, are these two sentences grammatically correct? Thank in advance.
(1) She sat before the mirror, turning her head from side to side.
(2) She sat before the mirror by turining her had from side to side.

Dear Teacher, why can't I use `by´ in place of `comma´ in the sentence, `` She sat before the mirror, turning her head from side to side.´´ Please explain to me. Thank you so much.

It simply makes no sense. In that sentence, 'by' means 'using the method of'; it does not mean 'while'.
