Please help me with this sentence concerning the use of "among" :

1. The class is divided into two groups and students check and compare their answers among each other.

#1 is correct, but I would use "with," not "among."
#2 is incorrect.

Is the use of "among" incorrect right here? It is my understanding that you use "among" as the opposite of "between." All students in each group are, in this context, helping each other. And since in each group you have more than two students, it makes sense to use "among." Isn't it? Honestly, I'm a bit confused now! What do you think?
